Pandora Predicted To 'Dominate' Web Radio For Next Few Years

Pandora Predicted To 'Dominate' Web Radio For Next Few Years

By Clyde Smith

With concerns about profitability and iTunes Radio about to launch, there's a lot of uncertainty around Pandora's future. But one recent report from IBISWorld claims that Pandora will continue to dominate web radio. Given that its stock recently hit new highs and mobile advertising is showing strong growth, Pandora actually has a lot going for it at the moment.

The recently teased IBISWorld report (via RAIN) notes that over the last five years: "The number of mobile internet connections grew at an annualized rate of 53.0% during the five-year period. 'As such, internet radio's audience increased an annualized 16.5% during the same period, far outpacing traditional radios,' according to IBISWorld industry analyst David Yang. Consequently, internet radio broadcasters have taken a larger slice of advertising revenue from the $17.3-billion Radio Broadcasting industry." Though citing positive usage and ad growth stats for web radio, the report also pointed to challenges with profitability due, in part, to the much higher royalty rates web radio broadcasters pay than do terrestrial radio broadcasters.

The IBISWorld analysts expect leaders such as Pandora, iHeart Radio and, most likely, the soon-to-launch iTunes Radio to maintain their lead with Pandora continuing to "dominate the marketplace as new entrants will have a difficult time attracting listeners away from well-established services." They also expect future competition to be limited, in part, "as new entrants will hesitate to enter the industry due to the inability of major players to operate profitably." So Pandora's leading in a race with many challenges.

Pandora's Mobile Ads A Bright Spot Pandora recently removed the 40-hour limit on free mobile listening with the expectation that this move might undermine subscriber growth. They maintain that such a move is positive because they've found ways to curtail those who go over 40 hours. In addition, this move "reinforces the success we are having with monetizing and selling ads on mobile platforms," according to chief revenue officer John Trimble. Pandora's mobile advertising is said to account for "70% of Pandora's total ad revenue."

It turns out that some of that growth is in local advertising, an area in which Pandora is investing additional resources. As Trimble revealed: "We've grown the sales force by 73% year-over-year, and a lot of that is to compete directly for that $15 billion of broadcast radio advertising. More specifically, while we did it on a national level, we pushed extremely hard into the ...read more

Steve Aoki's Manager On Getting Famous Online: Stop Promoting and Start Entertaining

Steve Aoki's Manager On Getting Famous Online: Stop Promoting and Start Entertaining

Steve Aoki's Manager On Getting Famous Online: Stop Promoting and Start Entertaining Vote-aokiThe folks at JustGo Music managed to slow down Steve Aoki's manager Matt Colon long enough to discuss how Aoki got so famous online.

Aoki has capitalized greatly on his over-the-top personality and his web presence reflects that personality. Yet Colon says the biggest secret has been making the shift "from promotion to entertainment" and pursuing choices that lead to higher audience engagement on social media.

According to Steve Aoki's manager Matt Colon (via Dotted Music), Aoki is successful for a number of reasons including the fact that people dig his music, he puts on a great live show and he performs as often as possible (300 gigs last year). But he tops off this combination of enjoyable music, hard work and great shows with a rapidly growing social media presence that didn't happen on its own.

Shifting From Promotion to Entertainment Colon credits Aoki's strong social following and media visibility with a shift in how Team Aoki approached creating content shifting from "typical DJ stuff, like music videos and tour diaries" to more creative fare including, when possible, creating one "non musical viral video a week."

On Facebook they "had been posting stuff about his new tracks or his upcoming shows, but fans didn’t really engage in that stuff." So they switched their "strategy from promotion to entertainment, and we started making viral videos and releasing weird or funny photos." The results have been powerful with Aoki's YouTube following growing from 30,000 to 690,000 subscribers in the last year.

On Facebook, Colon says they've seen Aoki's "posts go from 300 likes per post, to 500, 600, 1000 likes." Colon's bottom line: "We discovered that very few people on social media will like a post that says ‘Buy my new album’. You need to make a connection with fans, besides selling them something. Post photos of you in Starbucks. Tell a joke. People want to get to know the real you."

Aoki-youtube Running Aoki's YouTube Channel Like a Network Though Colon may be stretching things a bit by comparing Steve Aoki's YouTube channel to a tv network, they've clearly created a well-organized production schedule filled with amped-up music videos, road docs and, currently, a campaign for the DJ Mag 2013 Top 100 DJs. Colon points to last year's DJ Mag Top 100 campaign as an important turning point in their content production. They decided to make fun of the whole thing by parodying traditional political campaigns with such special moments as "Steve kissing babies, Steve as an eagle" and so forth. This approach even resulted in an honorary mention at the Webby Awards.

The current Top 100 campaign focuses on the concept that "Steve Is Just Like You" from toilet mishaps to digging through his sofa cushions. You can see from Aoki's YouTube channel homepage that videos are arranged into themes, from music videos to the Top 100 campaign, that are identified in the channel banner.

Each themed video is also added to a dedicated playlist and videos from the current major themes are each shown in separate sections on the main page. In addition, the typeface with theme title that appears on the still frame for each video helps tie individual themes together with the channel as a whole. It's a nice workaround for creating subchannels within a single YouTube channel without getting overly complex or splintering one's audience.

Channel analytics have also affected content production. For example, they learned from a third party company called The Audience that a third of Aoki's fans were Spanish speakers. So they've developed a humorous video series that connects to bilingual Spanish/English speakers. It Helps To Be Steve Aoki There's a lot more in this awesome piece from the JustGo Music Blog.

In particular, Matt Colon makes it clear that Steve Aoki is particularly suited to the age of social media. He has an over the top personality and he loves to be documented. But there's a lesson here for anyone using social media to promote their music. Focusing on news announcements and selling just isn't enough to engage an audience online. Making the switch "from promotion to entertainment," with what's entertaining decided by your aesthetic and audience response, is key to finding your own path to social media engagement and possibly even stardom.

Metropolis Electronic Guitar - Pim ZOnd FAve Electric

Metropolis Electronic Guitar - Pim ZOnd FAve

Here are a few photos of my "Metropolis" guitar. I gave it that name because the original Fritz Lang silent sci-fi film from Germany is one of my favourites.

Cover of "Metropolis (Restored Authorized...

Especially the robot Maria.
  metroback
The guitar is an old Quest guitar from the 80's that I haven't been able to find parts for. I added a Seymour Duncan pickup, and put the original pick-up into my Silver Bat travel guitar, which you can see in my MUSIC video called "Modo", plus I added 3 additional strings to that guitar after I hammered a vampire stake into the sound hole. You can see that in yet another music video ... Vampire wooden stake and hammer ... from the video "Modo", part of the as yet unreleased album "Live at the Parish of St. Charles".     metrofront

With this guitar though, I do most of my tweaking and hot-rodding, as I have to regularly clean the joystick control anyway, or it'll get gummed up, so I use it as a "test bed?". Plus I built and installed an electric slide which you'll hear on my new album project "Ethical Treatment of Machines" out in December.

Pim Zond - World's Largest Moon Guitar Mandolin - Recordsetter.com

Pim Zond - World's Largest Moon Guitar Mandolin 22" diameter

Experimental guitarist Pim Zond briefly plays an original free improvisation (now called "Dead Ring"). Hand-built from non-music related parts this 5 string acoustic "moon guitar" or mandolin has a body ring of 22" in diameter, and a fretboard of 11 inches is currently the world's largest. It's design is inspired by his previous record set with the world's smallest mandolin. Both are based on Chinese designs of pipa and rupan, as well as abstract sculptural appointments.
