Industrial rock arose at end of the 1970s as a number of rock and post-punk bands started to use synthesizers to add an industrial feel to their guitar-based music. The genre draws influences from a number of sources, including noise music and electro-industrial as well as post-punk and traditional rock music. 

It is often mistaken for industrial metal, which is a separate industrial genre that did not develop until nearly a decade later. Early industrial rock was made by a number of bands, including groups such as Killing Joke, SPK, Einsterzende Neubauten, Die Krupps and Test Dept. 

The work of these bands would later have an impact on the development of the genre and industrial music as a whole. Certain releases by influential industrial metal bands like as Nine Inch Nails can also be taken as examples of industrial rock. Other popular bands that have contributed to the genre in one way or another include Gary Numan, KMFDM, Celldweller and Gravity Kills. The American band Filter has also had considerable commercial success.

Since the genre draws heavily on influences from rock and post-punk as well as the world of electronic music, industrial rock bands often use a mixture of both acoustic and electronic music gear. Some of the most widely-used pieces of music equipment used in the genre are Digidesign Pro Tools, Apple Logic, the Sherman Filterbank, the Kurzweil K2000 and Clavia Nord Lead. 

The genre features frequent use of effects processors and industrial production techniques to distort recorded guitar riffs and acoustic drums in ways not usually found in other rock music genres.Similar to industrial metal, industrial rock experienced its peak of commercial success in the 1990s, especially in North America. Since then, popular interest in the genre has faded considerably.

This could get interesting. Digital Music News reports “The Xbox Music streaming service is venturing into iOS and Android platforms, as well as free internet streaming, with newly adorned with apps and features. The Web service will provide on-demand access to 30 million songs, with an ad-free subscription or ad-supported free use.”
What makes this even more interesting is that Microsoft appears to be paying more than any other streaming service that we know of (we don't know what Itunes Radio is paying yet).

Clavia - Swedish Synthesizer and Electronic Music Equipment Manufacturer

The first Clavia product was the Digital Percussion Plate 1, the earliest electronic drum pad with sampling capabilities ever produced commercially, which they originally designed and built in a basement. 

The Digital Percussion Plate would later evolve into the ddrum line of electronic percussion units in 1984, which proved hugely popular with drummers around the world. The ddrum line remained one of Clavia's most popular pieces of equipment until 2005, when the ddrum brand name was sold. Nowadays, Clavia is most well-known for its Nord Lead line of virtual analog synthesizers, the first version of which came out in 1995. The original Nord Lead was Clavia's first hardware synth and one of the very first virtual analog (or analog modeling) synthesizers available. The concept of virtual analog synthesis revolves around the use of digital signal processing technology to imitate analog waveforms.  

Clavia expanded on the concept of software-powered digital emulation of analog technology with subsequent follow-up models of the Nord Lead along with the Nord Modular line of virtual analog modular synthesizers, which combine the reliability of analog modeling with the flexibility of modular internal synth architecture. Nord Modular users assemble their own synth components virtually on a computer, which is then reproduced by DSP chips on the synthesizer. Compared to other major synthesizer manufacturers, 

Clavia is relatively small and employs merely a total of about twenty workers. Since the company's founding, all their synthesizers have been hand-made in Sweden using Swedish-produced components whenever possible. Custom-built guitars are just a dream for regular guys. You usually have to be famous or rich to get your hand on a custom hand built guitar that is made exactly for your convenience. The world today offers a mass manufacturing and global distribution that you could possibly buy almost everything you want, even from this web magazine!

For instruments like guitar, huge manufacturers are turning out high-quality instruments at very affordable prices and advance production techniques have made it possible for factories to offer options and a point of customization that would have been expensive and impractical in the past.

On the other hand, there are also booming cottage industries of individual guitar-makers who can build a completely custom-made guitar suited to your needs.

The primary reason for most is the basic ergonomic needs. You may justbenefit from a unique or avant-garde, experimental neck geometry that fits your hands better or custom electronics to better capture your live playing style. Any feature or combination of features that you can't find in the usual stock instrument can easily justify a need for a custom order.

A good starting point would probably be choosing wood for your guitar. You may need to research a little to find out what tone you will get from each of the different guitar tone woods. You should narrow your choices based on the tone that you are looking for.

As you start to explore the options, you will learn that there are so many variations in woods. For instance, if you wanted a spruce top, you can explore all the spruce varieties which include Sitka, Adirondack, Engelmann, German, Carpathian, Bosnian and a lot more.

However, the woods used for the back and sides offer more visual variety and come in an even wider range of exotic types.

Do your research to find out what the consensus is on the tone that you get from certain woods. Just remember that the wood is only the starting point and is not the only part of the guitar that will affect your tone.

If your friend or your luthier is willing, it would be a great idea to let him accompany you at lumber store that sells different types of exotic words. Think about the guitars you have owned in the past and decide what woods you have loved the most and keep these three things in mind:

Tone. The denser the wood usually gives off brighter sounds Beauty. Some woods are more beautiful or fancier looking. Weight. Denser wood is heavier.

Some wood stores may already have available guitar body blanks cut for you to choose from. If so, you will likely get these much cheaper than buy a larger piece to cut down.

Lastly, when choosing wood, beaware of the ecological and sustainability issues revolving many exotic woods. There are ethical and legal problems with a lot of the woods that are frequently used for guitar manufacturing, especially those used for the backs and sides. You should understand and consider your own position on this kind of issues and be aware of potential problems especially if you have any plans to travel abroad with your instrument.
