How Piracy is Hurting Indie Artists | ABS-CBN News

By trichordist

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Jackie Chavez has been trying to make it big as a singer and musician for five years now. It hasn't been easy.

“It's tough when you're just doing it independently and you don't have connections. You rely on pure talent. It's really hard,” she mused.

Chavez released her self-titled album in the Philippines in 2011, and she's trying to do the same in the U.S.

For now, she earns her money through gigs. But she said selling her songs online through iTunes and Amazon has been especially challenging, because of piracy.
“As artists, we put our dedication and hardwork to create music. It's so sad that they're just going to copy it. They're just going to pirate it,” she added.

Free Electronic Music Software - Choices To Start With Right Now

Free Electronic Music Software - Choices To Start With Right Now

If you are looking for a free electronic music software, then this article lists some digital audio workstations (aka DAW) that enable you to start music right now, without spending a dime. Although the free versions usually have slightly less features than the paid software, the following programs are surprisingly close to the professional ones in their capabilities.

They can be an excellent solution for someone who is on a low budget, or just wants to give it try without having to invest a lot of money. So, without further intro, let us jump right into the topic. Depending on the operation system that your computer is running on, there is free electronic music software available both for Windows, Mac, and Linux. GarageBand and Ardour The good news for Mac users is that it comes with a pre-installed music making software called GarageBand, which is a great tool to begin with.

While being an audio editing and mixing tool, it also enables you to work with MIDI files - an important feature that is essential for making electronic music. Mac users can also try Ardour, which is an even more comprehensive open-source DAW, being compatible also for Linux. Wavosaur Wavosaur is a Windows-oriented tool, containing a support for VST plugins and instruments. The uniqueness of this program lies in the fact that it requires no installing. This way it can be placed onto a USB memory stick, and be easily transported between multiple computers.

LMMS LMMS is a versatile music production environment, that can be run not only on Windows, but also on other operation systems. With its decent capabilities, this DAW can be compared to some commercial programs, since it offers such functions as putting together melodies and rhythms, creating and mixing various sounds, and manipulating with samples. Traverso DAW Traverso DAW is another completely free electronic music software. It is a cross-platform multi-track audio recording and editing program, which lets you create electronic songs from start to finish.

While known for its intuitive and simple user-interface, it harbours the utilities and operations that are usually contained in paid music production tools. Routing multiple tracks into one channel is only one example of a valuable built-in function, that can save a lot of CPU power as you start working with larger projects.

MU.LAB Another program that I decided to put into this list of free electronic music software, is MU.LAB. Although you can pay for the full version, which has slightly more features, there is this essential non-paid version called MU.LAB free, which delivers pristine audio quality. Containing all the tools to start making electronic music, this software works both in Windows and Mac.

Heavy Metal Music As Sound Therapy?

Heavy Metal Music As Sound Therapy?

Picture of a Led Zeppelin exhibition at Montre...

Whenever I present to groups about sound therapy or talk with people at trade fairs, I often get expressions of concern and questions about heavy metal music. These are valid concerns, so I decided to take a closer look. My closer look has provided some interesting insight. Heavy metal music has been a personal journey for our family. Our son, Matt, is lead guitar in a heavy metal band. It is his favorite music. He is a fabulously talented guitarist.

Matt is also an early indigo child and one of the wisest, old souls I know. If I need advice, I will often ask Matt. He is one of the kindest, compassionate, joyful and authentic people I know. Heavy metal music touched our family in a very personal way when Matt entered grade 10 in high school. By the second term, Matt was suffering from a clinical depression. For him, it was a true dark night of the soul. Medication and intervention were refused as he relied on his own inner wisdom and healer. From a very young age, this wise old soul has preferred to heal himself. Mind you, for a broken arm, he was taken to the hospital. The doctors were amazed at how quickly he healed.

What he found during this dark night of the soul was an expression of what he was going through in the form of heavy metal music. If he was feeling really angry, for example, he would play some really angry music, we would plug our ears, and shortly, he would emerge from his room calmer. Now, Matt regularly shares with me videos on YouTube of his favorite bands and performers. We gleefully share our wonder over the technical and musical accomplishments of some of these guitarists. I also share with him my concern over the content of some of the songs and its effect on him.

As a classically trained musician and sound and energy healer, I had some serious reservations about this style of music. Many people enthusiastically condemn heavy metal music. You may even be aware of a court case or two brought against a band concerning its influence over young people. I believe that labeling it "bad" and shoving it under the rug may not be the wisest thing to do. Music and art are reflections of what is going on in the heart, mind and soul of humanity. With heavy metal music, I believe that we are staring right into our collective shadow. What is the content of this shadow? Death, anger, fear, illness, sex, repressed weakness, shortcomings and instincts. Welcome to heavy metal. Each of us is a mixture of light (like compassion) and shadow (like dark angry thoughts). We like very much to avoid the shadow.

The problem is that the more we avoid or repress it, the darker it becomes. Sometimes we have to turn out all the lights and sit in the dark to understand the nature of the darkness. Sometimes that experience becomes the dark night of the soul where we confront our own shadow side. Humanity as a whole is undergoing a shift in consciousness right now and part of this shift involves understanding and creating a relationship with our collective shadow. As an individual, some of the unconsciousness mind becomes conscious.

As a species, some of our collective unconscious is becoming conscious and we are getting a good look. As a result, humanity is experiencing a collective dark night of the soul. The great psychiatrist, Carl Jung wrote about the shadow and coined the term collective unconscious.

One of the things he said was, "To confront a person with his shadow is to show him his own light." (Good and Evil in Analytical Psychology (1959). In Collected Works 10. Civilization in Transition, p. 872.) He also said, "One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious." (The Philosophical Tree (1945). In Collected Works 13: Alchemical Studies, p. 335.) The gift of heavy metal music is that it forces us to look at our collective shadow. We have been shoving it under the rug for millennia. It has grown deep and dark there. By bubbling up in music and art, it forces us to take a good look and make some choices about what we see.

How to Make a Podcast

How to Make a Podcast

<strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Podcast</strong> Awards
Podcast Awards (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

A podcast is an easy way of distributing media files over the internet, and this article will tell how to make a podcast. The first thing necessary is a domain, and a host on which to store the media files for the podcast.

Getting a domain is simple and easy, there are many domain registrars that can register a domain for someone for a small fee. Some of these domainregistrars are GoDaddy.com, Dotster, or Network Solutions are some that provide domains.

The domainregistrar will, for a small fee, enter the chosen domain, provided it is not being used, into the computers that form the backbone of the internet. These computers will be told where the domain is located on the internet; what host it is that holds the domain's information. In order to give them that information, the name servers that are held by the host need to be associated with the domain

Once the domain is in place, a good host should be found. The host that is chosen should offer a large amount of both disk space and a much larger amount bandwidth.

Disk space is neccessary because the site which holds the podcast will be storing large media files; audio or video files that take up a lot of space and are difficult to compress. The large bandwidth is necessary because transferring these large files many times to many different people will use up the quota quickly.

A good amount of diskspace would be several GigaBytes, bandwidth should be in the tens or hundreds of Gigabytes. Once the host is set up, it should offer you a couple of addresses called nameservers. Inputting these server addresses into the site where the domain was registered will complete the domain setup and allow the site to be found on the internet.

The next step for people who want to know how tomake a podcast is installing the software necessary to maintain the podcast. A small piece of coding called dircaster.php can be used to set up a basic level of podcast. Dircaster.php can be found easily by searching for it in any search engine.

Once it is located, it should be edited to reflect the particulars of the domain and uploaded to the site. Dircaster.php will generate an RSS file, or feed, that tells the subscriber about the new files available for downloading.

To begin podcasting, create the audio files that should be podcast, fill in the information about the file such as date, author, etc, and upload them to the same directory that contains dircaster.php. You now have a podcast, and all that is needed is to publicise the address of the file dircaster.php. To update the podcast with newinformation, just upload the new files. Other things to make the podcast better might be a site that contains information about the podcast, but it isn't necessary.

Don't Let Criticisms Of Music Crowdfunding Stand In Your Way

Don't Let Criticisms Of Music Crowdfunding Stand In Your Way 不要让批评的音乐Crowdfunding支架,在你途中的

By Clyde Smith

Though a variety of people, some of them undoubtedly well-intentioned, have criticized music crowdfunding over the last few years, their criticisms generally fall flat. Ranging from namecalling to misrepresenting financial reality, such criticisms indicate objections that are fairly limited and fail to recognize crowdfunding's emergence as a legitimate approach to funding.

One could simply reject all criticisms of music crowdfunding as beside the point as does Bemuso below. And the bottomline is that no one's required to pledge to a campaign.   Bemuso Takes a Clear Stance But criticisms do represent claims that may pop up randomly in the course of crowdfunding and it's nice to know why they don't represent a credible threat to the legitimacy of all that hard work you're doing. It's In Bad Taste, Like Panhandling! When people attack crowdfunding with name calling, it usually reveals their misunderstanding of crowdfunding.

Calling it panhandling or handouts is an attempt to give crowdfunding an air of randomness and illegitimacy. But pledge/reward-style crowdfunding as practiced on Kickstarter, Indiegogo and PledgeMusic by musicians, is an odd hybrid of presale and patronage that is based on the voluntary participation of individual supporters who typically receive a reward for their pledge. That seems neither random nor illegitimate. How Can You Ask Your Fans to Pay For the Process? A corollary to this concern might be an objection to the self-publishing aspects of crowdfunding but that's more an issue in literary circles than in music.

However both tend to focus on the idea that only certain sources of money are appropriate as funding sources. But crowdfunding's disruption is that of unleashing the crowd, the audience, one's army of fans, and allowing them to fund what they wish to receive rather than waiting to buy what they're eventually offered.

It's a powerful concept that strongly differs from the idea that only those with plenty of money should be able to decide what's available to fans. But There Are No Guarantees With Crowdfunding! It's true that crowdfunding platforms don't offer refunds, they simply facilitate transactions, and it's true that some people will take advantage of those platforms to defraud funders.

To some degree that's simply natural. Put humans and money together and such things happen. Though it's true that bands have been funded and couldn't complete projects, most of the big failures have come from gadgets that were incredibly overfunded and yet not really ready for producton or that miscalculated the costs of production. Left Handed Guitarists How Should They Play Their Guitars?

How Should Left Handed Guitarists Play Their Guitars?

Guitar Building Ebooks Click Here!

left-handed Dick Dale Dick Dale (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I was recently thinking about left handed guitar players (I know I need to get out more often) and wondered what effect their left handedness had on their playing style. Most of the very famous ones we are familiar with but I'll list some anyway:

Jimi Hendrix- yep he has to go first still - as you probably know he mostly played a restrung right handed guitar which he played upside down. (the guitar, not Jimi, though early on who knows). Gibson did however custom make him a left-handed Flying V in 1969 which he used at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970.

Kurt Cobain - played a mixture of left-handed guitars and upside-down restrung right handed guitars. He favoured Mustangs and Jaguars, though dabbled a bit with Strats and had some custom made for him.

Paul McCartney (free again!) I know he played bass in the Beatles but he also played and plays guitar. Trivia fact - the guitar he first learned to play on which belonged to a childhood friend sold for over $600,000 in 2006! If you know some aspiring young rock gods you should perhaps lend them some gear (as long as you get it back and they don't trash it).

Dick Dale - It was good to see him getting some attention thanks to the inclusion of Miserlou in Pulp Fiction. Initially played an upside down right handed guitar but did not restring it so the strings were also 'upside down'. Even when using a left handed guitar keeps strings upside down.

Albert King - influential blues guitarist who also favoured 'upside down' strings, whether on an upside down right handed guitar, or a left-handed version. He was a big fan of the Gibson Flying V, and thanks to down-tuning his guitar had a very expressive and individual sound.   From this we can see therefore that there are 3 main options available to lefties:
1) Use a right handed guitar and simply turn it upside down leaving the strings as they are. This will definitely have a large impact on your playing style and sound. Using 'normal' training materials and tabs will be difficult but you may be the next Dick Dale or Albert King.

2) Use an upside down right handed guitar and restring it. Although some purists may scoff this is certainly fairly straightforward for electric guitars. It can be difficult sometimes using the volume and tone controls and some guitars may just not be comfortable to use this way.

3) Buy a purpose built left handed guitar. This avoids having to restring your guitar and will mean that all the controls that you need will be in easy reach. Will also avoid difficulties in using an unusual arrangement of strings and will make more training materials available to you. Less likely that clumsy right-handed friends will want to borrow your guitar and return it after bouncing it off a concrete floor.

Your guitar should be pretty much plug n' play out of the box (well perhaps tune it first). Aesthetically your guitar will probably look more balanced and like what it's designers intended. So overall if you are just starting out learning to play guitar and are left-handed then

I would recommend finding a left handed guitar that you like. It will make your learning curve (to use an overused phrase) a bit smoother. Later on once you have learned the basics feel free to experiment as that's part of the fun in learning to play guitar, whether you're a lefty or not. Bob James is left-handed and plays guitar. Though not terribly interesting these facts means that he's interested in left handed guitars. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=B_James

Electro Acoustic Guitars - Different Types

Electro-Acoustic Guitars - There Are Actually Different Types To Choose From

George Harrison
Cover of George Harrison

Popular music making has never been just about electric, acoustic, bass and electro acoustic guitars. It is interesting that in the 21st Century with pop music no longer considered a teenager fad, that some people still do not realise that there is a history of instruments that have shaped the way guitars now look and play. For the benefit of those who want to learn about the different types of guitar and therefore different types of music, I have put together a very brief summary of these so that you can learn more :

Acoustic Guitar: The most common hollow bodied guitar on the planet. The hollow body acts as a sound box so there is no electronic amplification required. This instrument is used in all musical genres.

Electric Acoustic Guitar: Essentially an acoustic guitar but with pickups to increase amplification and add effects as appropriate. It would be difficult to distinguish between the acoustic and electric acoustic by simply looking at them. They can also be played without amplification.

12 String Guitars: Obviously, has twelve strings which are arranged in pairs. Typically, the G, B and e string pairs (thinner strings) are tuned in unison and the E, A and D pairs (fatter strings) are tuned in octaves. The guitars can be either electric or acoustic and are generally used as a rhythm accompaniment. For some great examples have a listen to The Byrds and folk music.

Solid Body Electric: Basically has a body of either a single or multiple pieces of solid wood that uses electromagnetic pickups to induce a signal. Famous names include the Fender Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster and Gibson Les Paul.

Chambered Body Electric: This guitar is also known as the electro or semi acoustic guitar. Like the solid body it uses electromagnetic pickups to induce a signal with the body being made of single or multiple pieces of solid wood with hollow chambers. These will be seen as either arch top guitars or jazz guitars. Famous examples are the Epiphone Casino and Gibson ES335.

Steel: This guitar is played by laying steel bar or slide laid across the strings rather than using finger fretting. Lap steels come with 6 or 8 strings with the pedal steel coming with up to 13. Some versions, called pedal steel guitars have, unsurprisingly, pedals and knee levers to change the intonation and resonance of the strings. They tend to be picked not strummed.

Resonator: This type of guitar uses metal resonating cones instead of a soundboard to produce sound. A Dobro is a common term for a resonator guitar and is commonly played with a slide and picked as opposed to strummed. You are likely to have heard this on country or bluegrass tracks. George Harrison of The Beatles used one during the late 1960s and early 1970s. A common make of resonator guitar is a National.

English: Zumsteel Double 10
English: Zumsteel Double 10 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Those are the most common, however there are some others that you may come across:

Weissenborn: This is a specific type of acoustic lap steel guitar, built with the body cavity extending under the fretboard. Less than 5,000 were ever produced. Baritone: A guitar with a longer scale length so that it can be tuned lower. Baritone guitars can be tuned a third, a fourth, or even a fifth lower than standard tuning. These were commonly used by The Beach Boys and in other surf type music.

Harp Guitar: A guitar with extra low strings meant to be plucked as low-end harmony notes. The low notes tend to come without a fretboard. They have been around for over 200 years in various forms. Tenor guitars: These are tuned in fifths, C G D A. They have four strings and are slightly smaller than the standard acoustic or electric guitar. Their configuration and sound makes them suitable for both rhythm and lead. Renowned manufacturers such as Martin and Gibson have made versions in the past.

Guitarron: It's a very large, deep bodied guitar, played in Mexican Mariachi bands. It is a fretless, nylon stringed guitar. Mostly used for doubling notes at the octave, hence it has the unusual tuning of A D G C E A. You will doubtless have seen one of these on film and it was used by Scottish band Fairground Attraction in the 1980's.

Russian Guitar: This is a seven string acoustic guitar and tends to be strummed or finger picked. It is usually tuned in thirds. There are, of course variations of each of these guitars, but hopefully you will see that it is not just about acoustic, electric, bass or electro acoustic guitars. There is a whole spectrum of styles and sounds to explore and enjoy. Legend Guitars are a helpful online guitar shop that will compare United Kingdom website pricing to find you the right selling prices for guitars and guitar associated extras. They will focus on the electro acoustic guitar. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Oliver_Clark

Music Piracy – An Artist’s Opinion | Sara Tiemogo

Music Piracy – An Artist’s Opinion |  Sara Tiemogo

By Trichordist Editor

Music piracy is stealing. And it does hurt the musician. Over the past decade, we have gradually shifted from physical distribution to digital distribution with the advancement of mp3 players, specifically the advancements of Apple and it's “iProducts”. Digital distribution now accounts for more than 52% of the music industry in the US.

But there was a time during the shift when people had difficulty placing “value” on a digital product, with tangible products being of more value. This is what led people to believe that they aren't really “stealing”, because a file can be duplicated an infinite number of times and not “cost” the musician anything. But it does cost us.
