Fast Heavy Downstroke Strumming On Metal Bass Chords With Speed Licks

Fast Heavy Downstroke Strumming On Metal Bass Chords
Playing metal bass is fun and not just for those bassists who are only interested in the metal style of music. The heavy sound and fast playing is a hallmark of metal which has a variety of variations from classic metal, nu metal, hair metal, etc.
Metal bass riffs are used over metal chords and can be made up of chords themselves. For example, power chord riffs are often used in metal. The bass picking method used for the lead playing may be alternate picking for scales, and sweep picking on arpeggios for example.
While chords are picked in various directions, one method is repeated, rapid fire down strokes, in one direction without alterations that makes the sound heavy and characteristic of the thrash metal style. Metal chords are also alternate picked many times as well, depending on the style that you want to emulate and your own personal preference.
While some metal chords may seem like easy bass chords, executing them properly and with precision is an art that takes practice and dedication to the style. Often times, the chords may be some form of a power chord, whether b5, +5,(diminished or augmented) straight power 5 or other type of chord.
A common technique used when playing these chords is palm muting which can be added on and off to create a different tone while playing the same chord, at the same speed, in the same song. The type of distortion and the quality of your technique will create a heavy, percussive rhythm sound which must be able to be maintained throughout the length of a standard song.
You will find that as you practice some of these rhythms whether with consistent down strokes or alternating up and down pick strokes, you will have to have your hand and forearm relaxed because if you get too tense you picking hand will start to lock up on you and you will not be able to maintain your speed or accuracy.
The speed bass licks and riffs that are played over metal chords need the energy of the heavy chord rhythm to have a solid sound background to play the solo over. Whether the licks are played with alternate picking or economy picking, one thing is for sure, they will not be played with all down strokes.
A chord riff could be played that way depending on how it is constructed. The real secret to metal bass chords and chords of all types is to learn your bass in a way that is going to give an intensive education on the bass. For bass players from beginner to advanced, and all styles including jazz it is best to learn the bass with a serious software program.

Interesting Facts About Guitars
English: Russian seven-string acoustic guitar with electric pickup from the early 60's. Manufacturer: Moskowskaya eksperimentalnaya fabrika muzikalnikh instrumentow (Photo credit: Wikipedia) |
by Roberto Sedycias
The guitar (violao) is a musical instrument that utilizes strings to produce sound. Usually, guitar is made with six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten and twelve string guitars are not rare.
Guitar (violao) is considered as an instrument in many forms of music like blues, country, flamenco, rock and even pop. Acoustically playing, the guitar involves production of the tone by vibration of the string and modulation by the hollow body. Electronic manipulation can also be done on the tone using an amplifier.
Combinations of various woods, with either nylon or steel strings are used for the construction of guitars. The person who makes and repairs string instruments like guitar is called a luthier.
History and development of string instruments similar to guitar (violao) can be traced back to at least 5,000 years. In those days, when synthetic material was not available for making guitars, a guitar was defined as `a long, fretted neck, flat wooden soundboard, ribs, and a flat back instrument, most often with incurved sides`.
There are two major types of guitars:
Acoustic guitar (violao): A soundboard (present in the front of the guitar body in the form of a piece of wood) is used to produce the sound from this kind of guitars. No external arrangement or device is needed to produce sound. This makes the acoustic guitar quieter than other commonly found band or orchestra instruments and often an external amplifier is used to make the guitar sound audible and to match the sound of other band instruments. The latest range of acoustic guitars come with a host of pick-ups for amplifying and modifying the raw guitar sound.
Within the acoustic guitar type, the sub-categories include: Classical guitars; Flamenco guitars; Steel string guitars (include the flat top or `folk` guitar); Twelve string guitars; Arch-top guitars; Renaissance or Baroque guitars; Resonator, resophonic or Dobro guitars; Russian guitars; Acoustic bass guitars; Tenor guitars; Harp guitars; Extended range guitars; Guitar battente.
Electric guitars: Electric guitar bodies are solid, semi-hollow or hollow. The sound produced is little and low without amplification. An amplifier forms an integral part of electric guitars. Vibrations of steel strings converted into electric signals by electromagnetic pick-ups are fed in to an amplifier using a cable or radio transmitter. The sound is often modified either using electronic devices or through distortion of valves naturally. The pick-ups here are of two types: single line or double line, each can be either active or passive. Electric guitar sound is most commonly used in jazz, rock-n-roll and blues style of music.
Construction of the guitar (violao) is based on whether the player is left-handed or right-handed. Usually, players use their dominant hand to pluck the strings. For most of the people, it is the right hand. The other hand of the player is on the frets for depressing and gripping guitar strings.
The various major guitar components include: headstock, nut, fretboard, frets, truss rod, inlays, neck, heel or neck joint, strings, guitar body and pickups.
There are certain accessories that might be helpful while playing a guitar (violao).
Accessories like:
Plectrum - also called the guitar pick, is used for picking the strings. It is made of a plastic like hard material; Slides - used for creating glissando effect in blues and rock genre of music. Neck of a bottle, knife blade or round metal bar, any of these can be used as a slide; Copatasto - it is used for changing pitch of open strings.

Learn Guitar By Ear

And, if they are lucky, after many years of hard work they may even become quite a masterful player. The guitar, especially, is held up as one of the more popular instruments to which people dedicate themselves. With images of musical grandeur in their heads they apply themselves night and day to the practice of guitar in the hopes of someday becoming proficient. But there are a rare few of us who can actually learn guitar by ear, an inherent skill that graces only the lucky among us.
Ultimately, you never know until you try if you can learn guitar by ear. If you are interested in taking up guitar and have a few chosen songs that you would really like to learn to play . If you play the song on a CD, those who can play guitar by ear can mimic the notes they hear on their own instruments.
For those who have a working knowledge of the guitar the ways in which to hold it and the tone that each vibrating chord makes the possibility to learn guitar by ear is far more probable. Until you really understand the sounds that each chord is capable of making, it will be difficult to replicate the sounds you hear in your music on the strings of your guitar.
In some cases it is possible to train yourself to learn guitar by ear. Begin by learning the sounds the strings make on your guitar; really process this and hear it in your head as well as your ears. Listen to how the sounds change as you change chords and begin to listen to the music on your CDs with an ear towards those chord changes.
You will soon begin to hear chord changes in the songs that you have listened to over and over without ever previously recognizing those chords. Its amazing how your ear changes once you begin to learn guitar; suddenly you are able to make those necessary correlations between the sound that your guitar makes and the sound that the guitar makes in some of your favorite songs.
Pick one part of the song and begin to try it out on your own guitar; keep trying until you are able to replicate the sound. Soon enough you'll be able to piece the song together; often sounds are just repetition of the same chords.
While playing music adeptly by ear is in inherent skill, you can still learn guitar by ear if you are dedicated and single-minded in your task.

Once upon a time, the mere act of strapping on an electric guitar and
cranking up an amplifier marked one as an outsider, a rebellious badass
who refused to live by the laws of a "decent" society.
But today's cookie-cutter rockers and forgettable pop janglers make
studying for the priesthood seem like an edgier pursuit than playing
guitar in a band.
Guitar World thought it might be instructive to salute some
genuine rock weirdos — 25 individuals whose unique personalities and/or
